Boston University offers an excellent online program for studying genealogy. The genealogy department has a faculty of four highly accredited genealogists. These individuals take their job as professors very seriously and thoroughly enjoy teaching others the tricks of their trade. The faculty is passionate about genealogy and each member of the faculty has a different area of specialization. The faculty members have won awards, written books and worked for several genealogy associations.
Melinde Lutz Sanborn is the program director and specializes in forensic research. She is the vice president of both the American Society of Genealogists and the Massachusetts Genealogical Council. Sanborn is also an editor of “The New Hampshire Genealogical Record” and co-editor of “The National Genealogical Society Quarterly”. She is also an author of several books including volumes I and II of “The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England”. Sanborn has also receieved the prestigious Donald Lines Jacobus Award.
Thomas W. Jones teaches “Evidence Evaluation and Documentation” for the genealogy department. He has a PhD in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. Jones is the director of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is a past president of The Board for Certification of Genealogists. He has been in the field for decades and has experience in several areas of genealogical research. Jones has lectured on genealogy all over the world and has received a Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit.
Elissa Scalise Powell teaches “Foundations of Genealogical Research” at Boston University. She emphasizes the basics of genealogical research while incorporating modern techniques and everyday example. Her students find her easy to comprehend and helpful when they have questions. Powell has a Bachelors in Mathematics from Gannon University and teaches at several other academic institutions in addition to Boston University, including The Community College of Allegheny County and The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. She is a former director of The Association of Professional Genealogists and has appeared on a PBS special titled “Ancestors 2”. Powell is an author and editor as well as a regional and national genealogy lecturer.
Allison Ryall is a technology specialist and teaches “Problem Solving Techniques and Technology”. She is a modern methods research specialist and also specializes in online research. She has a Bachelors in History, a Bachelors in Russian Studies and a Masters in American and New England Studies, all from the University of Southern Maine. Ryall also works for the National Genealogical Society’s Home Study Course and is a co-chair for the FGS Ancestors Road Show.
These four individuals collaborate to teach each and every student the basics of genealogy as well as modern day techniques in genealogical research. These professors are approachable and helpful while providing a complete education for their students.
