How many people are sitting out there right now working a dead-end job with no real prospects of improving their lot in life anytime soon? My guess would be too many. Lots of people have wasted years, even decades, doing something that they were not particularly interested in, working the days away just to earn a paltry paycheck and exist until the next payday. That is great if you have no ambition and do not want to have something better. However, most people in that position are anything but happy and want to find some way to get out of the malaise and into something exciting, lucrative, and meaningful. The answer for just about all of these people is college.
Most people who are stuck at the bottom of the ladder with no hope of ever getting higher have one thing in common: They never went to college. These people often had a job out of high school where they made what seemed like good money at the time, and they never moved on. When it came time to move out of mom and dad’s house, get married, and raise a family, they learned that the “good enough” job that they had for so long was no longer good enough. By the time realization dawns, many of them think it is too late and that they will be forever consigned to working the dirty jobs while other people pass them by with opportunities that are not available to people without college degrees.
When these people are confronted with the possibility of going to school, the first reaction is usually denial. “I will not have enough time,” “I cannot afford it,” and “I cannot handle such a complex program” are the most common forms of defense. What they fail to realize, and what some of them learn if they follow up, is that they can find the time, they can afford it, and they can handle the difficult concepts that students must learn in a college degree program.
College is more accessible than it has ever been. On the financial front, the availability of student loans makes the financial barrier to attending school all but nonexistent. Just about anybody can qualify for loans to pay for tuition and expenses. These loans are deferred until after graduation so you do not even have to start paying until you finish school and find a career path. With the rising popularity of adult learning, traditional colleges are offering night and weekend degree programs aimed at people with weekday jobs. Online colleges have programs that allow students to complete courses from home on their own time. These classes allow people from all over the country to learn together regardless of their situation. College is not easy, but there is no reason that any reasonably intelligent adult cannot buckle down and complete the necessary credits to earn a degree. College is not too hard for anybody who puts in the work.
To get out of that dead-end job, it is time to put excuses aside and work towards a college education. By the time you are finished, you will wonder what took you so long.
